Alexander Wines

A bit different

Below you will find a selection of wines which you may not have come across before. If you like to be different from everyone else (who wants to be normal?) we suggest you try these.

Our staff have varied and educated palates and we have enjoyed tasting these wines along with Fraser Alexander who has personally chosen these for our portfolio.

We hope you find something new to enjoy from this selection.........

Via Romana Mencia, Ribeira Sacra, Spain - 2009
£11.55 a bottle

Similar in style to Cabernet Franc, the Mencia grape is one of the popular grapes grown in the North West of Spain in the Galicia area. Full of ripe red juicy fruit flavours with a delicate essence of violets on the finish this wine is perfect with whites meats and fish.

The Torrontes grape variety is unique to Argentina and DNA testing has shown this to be a hybrid of Muscat of Alexandria and Mission, both which would have made their way over from Spain. It is thought that the two grape varieties would have been grown in the same vineyards and cross-pollinated to form the Torrontes variety resulting in an elegant aromatic and intriguing wine. Flavours of honeyed citrus, peaches and roses make this wine an ideal match with Asian cuisine.

Hailing from Sicily this grape variety produces a light and refreshing wine with zingy lemon flavours. This is a fairly new wine to Alexander Wines and has had a great reaction from those who have tried it.

Usually grown in the Languedoc region of France this grape flourishes in California. Award winning wine maker J.Lohr, from Califoria, has created this stunning wine using the Valdiguie grape which has characteristics similar to Gamay. Bright magenta in colour, this wine has juicy flavours of brambles and subtle spice.

Vinaldena Verdejo, Rueda, Spain - 2010
£7.99 a bottle

This wine comes from a small village in the Rueda region called Pozaldez, which only has about 150 inhabitants. This area is famous for producing crisp and fresh wines from the Verdejo grapes which grow superbly well there. The grapes are harvested at night where the temperature is significantly cooler, 10-12°C and then transferred to the cellars where it is also cool. This results in less oxidation occurring and keeps the freshness of grapes and juice used to make this refreshing wine. A great alternative to Sauvignon Blanc.

Rigal 'The Original' Malbec, Cahors, South West France - 2009
£7.99 a bottle

Long before Argentina brought Malbec to the masses, Cahors in the South West of France had perfected the art of producing rich, densely fruited wine at a fraction of the alcohol levels produced in the New World. In homage to the birthplace of Malbec this wine is packed with ripe plum and bramble flavours and at only 12.5% alc the finish is unbelievable long and moreish.
